Advocates of an RBE

As part of my previous post regarding the Constellation Model, I put out a call to find the various groups and organisations advocating a Resource Based Economy. Either directly or indirectly.
Having done so I no longer classify myself as a Zeitgeist Movement member, but an advocate for the RBE.

Here is the primary list which is still being actively updated (if you have a great description or know where to find a logo, do or don't think an org should be listed then please comment at the bottom or email contact@zeitgeist-info.com). Thank you.

Here is the current list :

  1. The Venus Project
  2. The Zeitgeist Movement
  3. Resource Based Economy Foundation
  4. Free world charter
  5. Tromsite
  6. Technate
  7. European Organization for Sustainability (EOS)
  8. Atlas Initiative Group
  9. We World Technologies
  10. RBOSE
  11. Planetary Skin

A detailed explanation of the organisations is below.

The movement initially started with the release of the film Zeitgeist Addendum which was created by Peter Joseph. The movement has approximately 500,000 active members and it's activism focuses on explaining the RBE and helping change peoples mindset and values.

== Resource Based Economy Foundation ==

RBE Foundation Logo

Website : http://www.rbefoundation.com/

The RBE Foundation (RBEF), was created to gather the resources and project management expertise which will be required when undertaking some of the larger projects which will be required to transition to a Resource Based Economy. Partially due to the fact they were collecting money (one of the many resources which will be required) there was previously a falling out with the Zeitgeist Movement, however they have a strong interest in collaborating with other groups.

This is about quickly getting to the heart of one of the RBE concepts. No longer needing money.
A simple and quick way to explain some of the ideas and get people to indicate their interest.

== European Organization for Sustainability (EOS) ==

EOS Logo

Website : http://www.eoslife.eu/

The European Organisation for Sustainability (EOS) is an autonomous research organization comprised of volunteer members from around the world. It was founded in 2005 and is registered as a non-profit association in Umea, Sweden.

The mission of EOS is to achieve the aforementioned vision with reference to:

  • To investigate unconventional socio-economic and political paradigms, employing scientific methodology as the prime tool.
  • To allow a community for the critical examination and development of the underlying philosophy of present potentially new social, economic and political paradigms.
  • To perform the aforementioned in light of the contemporary challenges of energy availability, climate change, aging population, health and economic disparity.
  • To elucidate means of socially, economically and technically implementing sustainable reforms in a practical and realistic manner.
The ultimate vision of EOS is to employ a solid research and empirical foundation as a means to create an achievable society of sustainability that technically, socially and economically evolves. We have a vision of the future that sees a network of autonomous communities, each forming a sustainable building block for a sustainable society. These communities of about 200 people each  would form parts of an urbanate of about 10 000 people each. These urbanates form our replacement for cities.  We have no fixed design form an urbanate. Instead we have some general principles and expect their implementation should take on many different forms.
NB : Description taken from Technate.

== Atlas Initiative Group ==

Website : http://atlasinitiativegroup.org/

The Atlas City Project is a planned community living in a transitonal RBE (Resource Based Economy) to be built in America as a transitional conception of the ideas proposed by Jacque Fresco of the Venus Project. Project members are currently active working on the manual that will be implemented to build a city that doesn't use money, and make Atlas City a reality. This project invites open source community volunteer involvement, if you are inspired you can learn about our mission and get involved to support this project. All planning will be contained in the manual which will be completed before attempting to implement it. Expertise from all necessary disciplines will be required to ensure we have a sound implementation plan and are well represented in the ACP manual. We do need your help, please get involved!

== We World Technologies ==

Website : http://www.weworldtech.com/

WE is founded on the idea that we can achieve all we need using non-destructive methods and technologies. Non-destruction is deeply rooted in human being.
WE accordingly aims at creating non-destructive technologies, trusting that astray technical systems will simply vanish when non-destructive ones are at hand.WE introduces a new era, The World Era (WE), in which the World Environment (WE) is paragon.WE aims at launching a number of technologies and methods characterised by:

  1. Responsible manufacture
  2. Serving essential needs
  3. Easy use
  4. Versatility
  5. Longevity

If you've read this far then I have a question.

What do you think about using the term "Sustainable Abundance" instead of Resource Based Economy?

An Introduction to a Resource-Based Economy [TEDx]

An Introduction to a Resource-Based Economy [ TEDx - Peter Joseph ]

Governance Structures – Decentralised or Constellation model

As Zeitgeist Movement chapters around the world are increasing in size there are a number of them growing beyond the size that a single co-ordinator can handle. On top of this, the Venus Project is feeling like it has lost control. As this happens there becomes questions about information flow, decision making, and how to prevent the bickering and in-fighting which will prevent humanity from taking the correct path and is far more likely that civilisation will spiral out of control, instead of finding itself at the veritable oasis that is the Resource Based Economy.

What is needed now is a defined governance structure which allows everyone to have a say, but with weighting given to those who have a greater understanding. The two main models are the Constellation model, and the decentralised Starfish model.

The Constellation Model of Collaborative Social Change

"The Constellation model is a governance framework for multi-organisational collaboration. It is a way of organising a group of interested parties to meet a need without having to create a new organisation to 'hold' the issue.

It is a tool to help us recognise and become conscious designers in a complex ecosystem of organisational collaboration. This constellation model emerged out of a need to support a tight partnership of 11 organisations – the Canadian Partnership for Children’s Health and Environment. It has been emerging and serving since 2001 and is in constant flux as we iteratively adapt the structure to serve our vision and to expand our reach and more effectively engage our ecosystem." -- http://www.socialinnovationexchange.org/node/169

In mid 2010 I attended a Social Innovator Dialogues talk by Tonya Surman about the Constellation model of collaborative social change.

The concept is a hybrid centralised/decentralised approach to helping and handling bundles of self-organising teams based around a common 'magnetic attractor'.

In this case that magnetic attractor would be a better future for all humanity and the vision statement is the Resource Based Economy.

Using this model the Venus Project, Zeitgeist Movement, Resource Based Economy Foundation, Free world charter, Tromsite, Humanity test.org and other such groups would form different constellations. With representatives from each being a part of the 'Stewardship Group'. [Refer to the the framework diagram below]

Each group could focus on what they do best. For example The Venus Project can work on the technical/engineering answers. The Zeitgeist Movement is good at spreading the word and helping change peoples mindset, the RBEF has a more resource gathering focus, and Tromsite is a great educational resource.

I like to think of the framework as an expandable net around the group. If the casing is made of steel then whilst it is hard to break, it can't expand and adjust very easily. In this example the steel box would be a large corporation with all its policies, procedures and legalities.

On the other spectrum, completely unmanaged groups have nothing to tie them together so they fly off in various directions very easily and can't push humanity towards the magnetic attractor (the RBE). It is hard to keep such groups focused. Think of it like this, Boiling water will turn into steam, but without being directed and focused it won't be able to turn the turbines that create electricity.

The Constellation model allows the right level of rigidity and flexibility for the current stage of RBE transition. It allows all the groups to work synergistically. To work together collaboratively and co-operatively, just as everyone is advocating the rest of humanity do.

For those that need more convincing that everyone can't go it alone, realise that it is hard to gather the resources required. 100 groups individually trying to raise enough time, money, members and physical resources to implement a transition will mean that none of them will properly succeed, but 100 groups working together certainly can. We need a certain threshold of resources before we can really start. Something far easier if there is 1 main group which is gathering the resources for 100 chapters/sub-groups. An example is that a government or corporation can donate time, money and resources to a registered non-profit, but can't easily contribute to 20 groups of ad-hoc members who meet every couple of weeks. On the flip side, the 20 ad-hoc groups can get a lot of work done, especially when they are action focused teams.

[Diagram] The Constellation Model Framework

Constellation Model Framework

For more information, and an explanation of what the wacky diagram means, check out the PDF.

I personally think ZM is already using something very close to this setup with its chapter structure, so it is not a very big leap. We are really just expanding who we regard as friends.

The other 'non-pyramid' based governance model's I've come across are the Starfish (vs the Spider) model explained below, and also the Geodesic dome principal that World Mind posted a lot about.

Moving forward we should aim to use the most effective governance model for the situation. The Constellation model could be perfect for the moment, but later on we will likely transition to a more Starfish, decentralised basis, and maybe after the transition we can use the Geodisic Structure. Note also that different constellations will likely have different structures internally. Some projects may themselves use a constellation model.

Please, do read the PDF and discuss.

The Starfish : Decentralised Governance

One thing that business, institutions, governments and key individuals will have to realise is that spiders and starfish may look alike, but starfish have a miraculous quality to them. Cut off the leg of a spider, and you have a seven-legged creature on your hands; cut off its head and you have a dead spider. But cut off the arm of a starfish and it will grow a new arm. Not only that, but the severed arm can grow into an entirely new body. Starfish can achieve this feat because, unlike spiders, they are decentralized; every major organ is replicated across each arm.

But starfish don't just exist in the animal kingdom. Starfish organizations are taking society and the business world by storm, and are changing the rules of strategy and competition. Like starfish in the sea, starfish organizations are organized on very different principles than we are used to seeing in traditional organizations. Spider organizations are centralized and have clear organs and structure. You know who is in charge. You see them coming.

Starfish organizations, on the other hand, are based on completely different principles. They tend to organize around a shared ideology or a simple platform for communication- around ideologies like al Qaeda or Alcoholics Anonymous. They arise rapidly around the simplest ideas or platforms. Ideas or platforms that can be easily duplicated. Once they arrive they can be massively disruptive and are here to stay, for good or bad. And the Internet can help them flourish.

So in today's world starfish are starting to gain the upper hand.

How did tiny Napster cripple the global music industry? Why is free, community based Wikipedia crushing Encyclopaedia Britannica almost overnight? Why is tiny Craigslist crippling the global newspaper industry? Why is Al Qaeda flourishing and even growing stronger? In today's world to answer this it is essential to understand the potential strength of a starfish organization.

The Starfish and the Spider by Ori Brafman and Rod A. Beckstrom, explores the phenomenal and unstoppable new power of the starfish organizations and will change the way you look at the world.

PJ Steps down

In somewhat unfortunate news, Peter Joseph, the creator of the Zeitgeist film trilogy and The Zeitgeist Movement is stepping down as the public figurehead of The Zeitgeist Movement.

He announced this in response to a post on the International Forum (3rd post on the 2nd page). The in which Jacque Fresco (most say misguidedly) condemns Peter Joseph and says that The Zeitgeist Movement doesn't know anything and have no plan.

Update : There's been an interview with Roxanne Meadows regarding The Venus Projects perspective

Video of Jacque which triggered the stepdown

PJ's post :

So, in consideration of this, with respect to Jacque - I will no longer be actively publicly representing TZM or TVP.
I could address his hasty statements directly, but I am not going to do that to myself as it's simply sad.

This falls on the heels of a level of personal exhaustion and general life frustration which requires personal time anyway.

I will continue to orient a radio show rotation of new speakers, content and help with event days and the many other project based issues in the background... I will also continue to personally finance the global movement's work...but I want everyone to know that I am removing myself as a forefront spokesman... a figure I never wanted to be, in fact. A position which has neg affected my personal and mental health a great deal, to be frank.

So, this is good grounds to see how many out there can lift themselves to high levels of communication. I have also informed TVP that all major press will be turned over to them so they can make sure "their" message is "accurate"... as apparently mine isn't.

At the end of the day, let it be known that I don't care about TZM or TVP or "Jacque Fresco" or "Peter Joseph" as entities to be perpetuated.

I care about a new, working social system only and I will not stop with that pursuit in the long run.

Michael's Perspective

Personally I feel that Jacque's comments regarding Peter Joseph and The Zeitgeist Movement are incorrect. PJ has always indicated that the RBE concept was created by Jacque. Yes, he took a less direct approach in explaining the RBE concept in his latest work, Zeitgeist Moving Forward. But that was so the information could reach a wider audience with it's more subtle approach.

It was Peter Joseph's film Zeitgeist Addendum which initially got myself and a large number of people interested in The Venus Project and the Resource Based Economy concept, and lead to myself creating a local chapter and this very website. Whilst I'd previously looked at The Venus Project's website, without a proper introduction to it, I very quickly jumped onto something else, however with the explanation of how bad the current economic system is and the explanation of the RBE, I became very interested and have spent the last 2.5+ years investigating and learning pretty much everything ZM related and more.

I've listened to the 50+ hours of Blogtalk radio, watched the many many hours of online video, read the books, listened to audio-books, and more. I've met Jaqcue and Roxanne in person and have done lots of research into various areas I had questions about, such as human behaviour, and intrinsic motivation. The Zeitgeist Movement has helped open up my eyes to whole new ways of learning about and understanding reality. However, having listened to such vast quantities of Jacques talks, after a while you hear him repeat himself and no longer learn any new concepts or important points. You understand the concepts and can explain them to people from a variety of perspectives and in a number of different methods. More importantly, when combined with newer research, such as the amazing content coming out of TED talks plus the latest in science, the concepts which Jacque is advocating will be implemented in a different way than his proposals. We are the ones who will updated the designs and plans and actually action them. Jacque put together a number of different ideas to create a new economic paradigm which has such potential that just the hope it generates is amazingly motivating, but it wasn't until Peter Joseph that the words of Jacque could be put in a way that the existing community could understand. PJ has done a great job, but when trying to access the next segment of society, it will likely require other communication figureheads to explain the ideas in different ways.

I will remark that it seems like the Zeitgeist Movement has reached a milestone point. Peter is stepping down as the figurehead of TZM at the same time I happen to be stepping down as the primary co-ordinator for the South Australian ZM chapter. Both of us have created a community which is self sustaining and growing. Whilst we will still be involved in the movement, it will be in different ways than before.

For those that know about the growth of a standard company, it usually goes through 4 main steps. In the startup phase, the leader is doer/Decision Maker, in the Initial Growth phase the leader is the Delegator/Direction Setter, in the Rapid Growth phase the leader is the Team Builder, Coach, Planner and Communicator, then in the Continuous Growth phase they are the Strategic Innovator, Change Catalyst, Organisation Builder and Chief of Culture.

Now, the Zeitgeist Movement is not a standard company, it is based much more on the starfish decentralised model of governance, plus some of the constellation model. However the main point I'm trying to get across is that the movement is changing, evolving, growing and adapting. We are becoming more decentralised and there is also a growing body of people suggesting that the conspiracy theory taint of the movement will adversely affect it's ability to grow to the required levels.

Admittedly branding and advertising has a noticeable effect. As an example, in blind taste tests of Pepsi versus Coke-Cola, most people will prefer Pepsi, however if you are drinking out of the actual cans and not generic, unlabeled cups (so know you are drinking Coke), then because of the branding, people will rate Coke-Cola higher. This effect is stronger than just that, with people taking a placebo which is said to increase cognitive ability (e.g doing puzzle problems).

RBE Transition Future

There's a few likely options for the future of the RBE transition :

  • The Zeitgeist Movement stays the same
  • The Zeitgeist Movement rebrands itself
  • Another organisation becomes the spearhead for the next part of the transition
  • A group of organisations appear and focus on different areas.
  • A hybrid of the above options

PJ and The Zeitgeist Movement has done a lot of work to try and shake the conspiracy theory basis from which it's initial seeds were formed and some people now being introduced to the movement complain about the highly technical language used. Having seen a number of organisations with similar tenants to the ZM and Venus Project which are promoting either a RBE directly, or something every similar, it's likely that there will be a hybrid of the future options.

The ZM will undergo a bit of a rebranding, but will likely focus mainly on spreading information and changing peoples mindset, but there will also be a number of groups which are branded and focused in different ways.

Some similar groups I know about are :

  • http://rbefoundation.com/ -- The Resource Based Economy Foundation : The first real direct offshoot from the ZM. Has a more resource gathering approach
  • http://www.tromsite.com/ -- The Reality of Me : A collection of various videos which together make 12 hours worth of documentaries which are based around the Venus Project and RBE. Uses a lot of ZM content.
  • http://www.freeworldcharter.org/ -- A recent addition which has a bit more of a political focus
  • http://humanitytest.org/ -- Humanity Test. Somewhat similar to the Free world charter, but doesn't seem to be directly based on the Venus Project ideas.

As you can see and guess, some groups will be more political, others with a focus on small test villages, or advanced science research, others on gathering the resources required to make a research city , and others may be about explaining the concepts but in ways that are more appropriate to their select target audience.

An example is that I recently received a call from someone who watched Zeitgeist Addendum at Zday last year (2010) and whilst the main points interested them, they were put off by the evolutionary instead of creationist point of view. Being a fundamentalist Christian they naturally had issues with the way the movie portrayed the core concepts. Whilst I had to bite my lip in order to not get into a religious debate (my stance is that people should have understanding instead of beliefs). The transition to a RBE is not religious nor political, it is about changing our definition of success, it is about changing our defaults, it is about changing how we value the world.

Note : When I talk about the RBE transition, I understand that the end result will not be exactly how The Venus Project envisages, it's likely to be a lot more varied.
